I played baseball for years growing up and had mastered my batting stance by the fifth grade. I smashed that calamitous typewriter into countless pieces with my fire poker. Glass keys flew in every direction. Knobs and levers snapped like twigs under the destructive force I applied to it. My anger was unleashed. The Remington had cost me the only person I ever felt like I truly needed in my life. It no doubt was partly responsible for the predicament that Cat and Grady found themselves in, if they were alive at all.

I finally stopped my rampage when there was not one single recognizable piece remaining. My suffering peaked with the loss of Ellie and her family, and that damn machine paid dearly for it.

The door slammed shut behind me.

Snapping my head toward the sound, I took the skeleton key from my pocket. I marched over to the door and quickly slid the key in the keyhole and locked it. An echoing click replied behind me.

My breathing stopped for a moment and I turned, the hairs on my arms standing on end.

On the desk sat the Remington typewriter. Shiny as the day I had found it. The smell of cleaning oil filled the room. The broken pieces had disappeared. A page was loaded and ready to type. The glass keys reflected light, pristine and flawless. The text upon the page appeared with a few more type clicks.
